The shops of private detective Philip Marlowe (Liam Neeson) run poorly when the beautiful Clare Cavendish (Diane Kruger) brightens up his run-down office with her face.
She has a commission for Marlowe. Her lover Nico Peterson (François Arnaud) has disappeared without a trace and the private detective is supposed to find him again.
As it turns out, Nico was allegedly found dead at the gates of an exclusive club. The almost unrecognisable corpse was quickly burned; the police seem to want to put the matter ad acta as an accident with driver escape.
But Clare is convinced that her boyfriend is still alive. So Marlowe continues to research like obsessed and comes on the track of a powerful and very rich family that shies back at nothing...
