With their main territories in Carrick, in Ayrshire, and further southwest in Galloway, the roots of the ancestors of the Kennedys of today are not known with certainty.
But one theory is that, in common with many other prominent clans and families who settled on the western seaboard of Scotland, they originally hailed from Ireland.
They gained high honours and distinction, being granted the lands of Dunure, in Carrick, as reward for their support of King Alexander 111 in his victory over the Danes at the battle of Largs in 1263.
Later acquiring the lands of Cassillis, near Dunure, further distinction accrued in 1457 when Gilbert Kennedy was created 1st Lord Kennedy.
David, the 3rd Lord Kennedy, was created 1st Earl of Cassillis in 1509, and was among the many Scots slain four years later, along with King James 1V, at the battle of Flodden. The dramatic saga of the Kennedys is chronicled here.

A name that resonates throughout the pages of the frequently turbulent drama that is Scotland’s story, ‘Murray’ derives from the place name of Moray.
A family of great distinction and with the motto of ‘Quite ready’, they were at the very heart of the bloody struggle for the nation’s freedom and independence, with the gifted commander Sir Andrew de Moray playing a key role in the freedom fighter William Wallace’s victory over the English at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, only to die later of wounds he had received.
One branch of the family, the Tullibardine Murrays, rose to great power and influence, acquiring through marriage vast estates throughout Perthshire, while the Murrays of Atholl benefited from the favour of King James V1 – later James 1 of England – through elevation to the peerage and the gift of Gowrie Palace at Scone.

Tracing a descent from a powerful family of Norman nobles who had hailed from Picardy, in modern day France, and fought at the side of Duke William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings in 1066, the thousands of Grays worldwide today can also lay claim to a proud heritage rooted firmly in the ancient soil of Scotland.
Many gained distinction in the bitter and bloody Wars of Independence with England. One of the ablest supporters of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce was Sir Andrew Gray, who played a key role in March of 1314 in ousting the English garrison from the mighty bastion of Edinburgh Castle in a daring night raid.
Others of the name share in the colourful and romantic traditions of two proud Highland clans – Clan Sutherland and Clan Stewart of Atholl.
Tinged with intrigue and murder, the dramatic lives and times of the Grays are recounted here.

The north west of Sutherland was for centuries the main territory of the Mackays, although they were also to be found in Argyll, Kintyre and much further south west in Galloway.
With the motto ‘A strong hand’, the main seat of the clan chief was the House of Tongue, on the eastern shore of the Kyle of Tongue, while this clan renowned for its martial skills also held the forbidding strongholds of Castle Borve and Castle Varrich.
In common with many other clans, the Mackays were often embroiled in bitter warfare with their neighbours.
In 1372, after opposing an attempt by the powerful Clan Sutherland to impose feudal superiority over them, the Mackay chief and his son and heir were callously murdered in Dingwall Castle by Nicolas Sutherland of Duff.
In later centuries, they became engaged as much sought after mercenaries in European wars, and their frequently bloody tale is chronicled here.

With the challenging motto of ‘I am fierce with the fierce’ and fearsome crest of a hand holding a dagger, transfixing a boar’s head, bearers today of the proud name of Chisholm have Scottish roots that stretch back to both present-day Roxburghshire, in the Borders, and much further north in Inverness-shire.
Originally descended from a band of Norman warriors by the name of ‘de Chisholme’, who fought at the side of Duke William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings in 1066, they later acquired lands in Scotland.
They fought valiantly in the cause of the nation’s freedom and independence, with Sir John de Chisholme of Berwick battling at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
In Inverness-shire, in 1349, Robert Chisholm was appointed to the powerful post of royal constable of Castle Urquhart, on the shores of Loch Ness.
Chronicled here is the stirring tale of bearers of the Chisholm name.

With some of the possible origins of their name steeped in high romance, the Hays of Errol, in Perthshire, to this day hold the hereditary title of Lord High Constables of Scotland – ranked second in importance to the holding of royal blood.
One of their imposing properties was Slains Castle, perched high on the edge of cliffs overlooking Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire. Now a brooding ruin, it is thought to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s book Dracula.
Also known as the ‘Handsome Hays’, it was Josslyn Hay, 22nd Earl of Errol, who was the inspiration for the 1987 film White Mischief, following his mysterious death in Kenya in 1941 by a bullet wound to the head; this was while sitting in his car in the area popular with British expatriates known as Happy Valley.
Infused with high drama, the colourful tale of the Hays from earliest times is recounted here.
