Believed to descend from an early sixth century son of Fergus MacErc, King of Ulster, who made the sea crossing from Ireland to Scotland’s west coast, those who would come to bear the Maclaurin, or Maclaren, name thrived for centuries in Balquhidder and Loch Earn in West Perthshire.
Followers of the powerful Earls of Strathearn, they were frequently to be found with battle-axe and sword in hand in major battles that included Bannockburn in 1314 while, in 1513, they were among the Scots killed at the disastrous battle of Flodden.
Described in government warrants as being ‘among the most dangerous of West Highland clans’, they fought for the Jacobite cause under the banners of the Stewarts of Appin and the Murrays of Athole at the battle of Culloden in 1746.
In more peaceful times, Charles MacLaren was responsible for establishing The Scotsman newspaper in 1817.

With their main territories in Carrick, in Ayrshire, and further southwest in Galloway, the roots of the ancestors of the Kennedys of today are not known with certainty.
But one theory is that, in common with many other prominent clans and families who settled on the western seaboard of Scotland, they originally hailed from Ireland.
They gained high honours and distinction, being granted the lands of Dunure, in Carrick, as reward for their support of King Alexander 111 in his victory over the Danes at the battle of Largs in 1263.
Later acquiring the lands of Cassillis, near Dunure, further distinction accrued in 1457 when Gilbert Kennedy was created 1st Lord Kennedy.
David, the 3rd Lord Kennedy, was created 1st Earl of Cassillis in 1509, and was among the many Scots slain four years later, along with King James 1V, at the battle of Flodden. The dramatic saga of the Kennedys is chronicled here.

Tracing a descent from a powerful family of Norman nobles who had hailed from Picardy, in modern day France, and fought at the side of Duke William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings in 1066, the thousands of Grays worldwide today can also lay claim to a proud heritage rooted firmly in the ancient soil of Scotland.
Many gained distinction in the bitter and bloody Wars of Independence with England. One of the ablest supporters of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce was Sir Andrew Gray, who played a key role in March of 1314 in ousting the English garrison from the mighty bastion of Edinburgh Castle in a daring night raid.
Others of the name share in the colourful and romantic traditions of two proud Highland clans – Clan Sutherland and Clan Stewart of Atholl.
Tinged with intrigue and murder, the dramatic lives and times of the Grays are recounted here.

The Bell clan is feted for providing the world with great inventions, like the telephone.
But their past is littered with infamy. For nearly 300 years they made a name for themselves as feared Border Reivers, who swept in on horseback under cover of darkness and plundered the land.
After being forced to give up their evil ways they spread their wings and blossomed around the globe. Today we rightly salute their many innovations.

Taking their name from the lands in Lanarkshire where they settled, the Crawfords spread westwards into Ayrshire and gained well-deserved renown as loyal defenders of Scotland’s freedom, often at a terrible cost to themselves.
A Crawford lass was the mother of the great patriot and warrior William Wallace, while in later centuries Crawfords became stalwart supporters of the Presbyterian religion.
One staunch defender of his faith was Hugh Crawford, the younger son of the laird of Auchinames, who was appointed the first minister at New Cumnock, in his native Ayrshire, in 1653, during the bloody struggle between the opposing forces of the Crown and the Presbyterian Covenanters.
Known as ‘one of Ayrshire’s band of true covenanting ministers’, he literally took to the hills to preach at open-air conventicles after being expelled from his parish.
Read here the high drama of the lives and times of the Crawfords.

Found not only in the Scottish Borders and present-day Dumfries and Galloway from earliest times, the Rae name was also to be found in the far-flung Highlands.
With broadsword and battle-axe in hand, many bearers of the name were present at pivotal events in the nation’s frequently turbulent history, while others – in a number of popular spelling variants of the name such as ‘Ray’ – have found fame and acclaim through decidedly more peaceful endeavours and pursuits.
In the world of contemporary music, Corinne Bailey Rae is the award-winning British singer and songwriter whose best-selling albums include her 2008 The Sea, while Johnnie Ray was the American singer, songwriter, pianist and recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame whose hits include his 1954 Alexander’s Ragtime Band and, from 1956, Who’s Sorry Now.
Presented here are the stirring and inspiring lives of times of bearers of the Rae name and its spelling variants.
